Last week we gave you the lowdown on motorized RVs and the different types that you can choose from. This week, we will talk to you about towable RVs! There are four main types of towable RVs, having in common the fact that you hitch them to your family car and drive them around that way.
Pop up trailers, or folding camping trailers, are the least expensive type of RV. Designed to be lightweight, they still provide all the things your family would need on your camping trip. The great thing about pop up trailers is that you don’t need a big truck to haul them around. Your mid-size car can easily tow them, and some compact cars can even pull them around. The other great thing about pop up trailers is that the sides collapse, so towing and storage is easy since they shrink to a small size. Usually included in a folding camping trailer are cooking facilities, heating, water tanks, sink, faucet, refrigerator, pull-out beds, a propane gas supply and 100-125 volt electrical system. Pop ups can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $25,000.
Travel trailers range in size, from a small bedroom to an engineless class A motorhome, and can range anywhere from 10 to 35 feet in length. Like Class A motorhomes, many feature a sildeout to maximize the trailer’s living space. Most full size sedans, SUVs, vans, and pickup trucks are able to do the job. Travel trailers usually have all the equipment you could ever want in a camper, including cooking facilities, heating, air-conditioning, toilet, shower, water tanks, 100-125 volt electrical system, refrigerator, faucets, and a propane gas supply. Depending on the model they can sleep up to eight people, and have a wide range of prices, your travel trailer could cost anywhere between $10,000 to $100,000.
Fifth-wheel trailers are quite similer to travel trailers. The difference is that a fifth-wheel trailer has an extension on the front that rests on the tow vehicle for support. This extension looks like a wheel, hence the name “fifth-wheel”. Usually you need a full-size pickup to tow a fifth-wheel, and many are already outfitted with an appropriate hitch for your fifth-wheel. The front extension often serves as space for a bedroom. Many fifth-wheels also utilize slideouts to maximize living space. Fifth-wheel trailers usually come with cooking facilities, heating, air-conditioning, toilet, shower, sinks, faucets, water tanks, 100-125 volt electrical system, and a propane gas supply. Prices go anywhere from $15,000 to $150,000.
Truck campers, which are also sometimes referred to as pickup campers or slide-on campers, are a camper body that is loaded onto the bed of a pickup truck, and then clamped on. Truck campers usually include cooking facilities, a refrigerator, heating, air conditioning, a toilet, water tanks, faucet, sink, 100-125 volt electrical system and propane gas supply. These campers can sleep up to six people and are priced anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000.
