The winter season is coming upon us, and the changes in temperature will also bring changes to many of our ways of camping in Georgia or anywhere else! While more people travel to the southern states during this season, there are still many who camp in the north and enjoy being out in the snow. Here are just a few tips to keep in mind when you get ready to head on the road in the colder months:
- Condensation build-up. Bring a dehumidifier with you. The use of the heat, hot water when showering, and the steam when cooking can produce a large amount of build-up. Not to mention the simple heat put off from our being in there as well. Wood cabinets have a high tendency to soak this in. The dehumidifier will help to keep your unit drier and minimize any deterioration that constant moisture might bring.
- Water pipes freezing. This is one of the most common problems. Those way up north may camp with trailers already winterized, but for those of you camping where temps may dip below freezing at night, water lines freezing can cause an issue in the RV. To prevent freezing water lines at night leave the faucet on with a small, steady stream of water coming out. This will help keep the water lines open and lower the risk for them freezing. Also wrap outside hoses with heat tape or pipe insulation as a precaution.
- Insulation of the RV. The use of window covers and shades will help block cold and wind at night. Removing them during the day will let sunlight into the RV. The inside area around where slide outs extend are also susceptible to drafts and cold seeping into the unit. Extra towels can be wound up and laces along these seams to help keep heat in.
- Taking care of the roof vents. Be aware of melting snow and that condensation can leak through roof vents. (Remember, this can also happen in the summer with rain!) Before venturing out, make sure these are caulked so that the water will not leak and risk the chance of mold.
