Park Model Cabins at Tres Rios

When you think camping, do you think rustic outback with only a pack and a thermos? Does the image evoke owning (or renting) a fully stocked RV like the one in the Robin Williams movie not long ago? Or does it look more like this:

This is one of our cabins at Tres Rios. Maybe you don’t own an RV and the thought of driving one fills you with an icy dread. Maybe you do have an RV but just want to leave it at home this once. If your idea of camping is more glamorous than sleeping on whatever rock you fall on, there’s a word for that: “glamping”. And this may be the cabin for you. Here’s the view when you first enter:

If you’re thinking you could live here, you’re right, it’s fully livable; from the high ceilings, knotty pine and clean lines, to the upstairs loft for kids (or short adults). It doesn’t sleep an army but you certainly won’t be tripping over each other. The kitchen has all the necessary appliances (microwave, fridge and oven) and a few extras, like a coffeemaker and blender. Let’s turn around and look from the hallway to the front door where we came in:

Look at that cathedral ceiling. It continues onto the porch, letting in gorgeous light and creating visual space. The comfy sofa is suitable for an afternoon nap, and open the cabinet doors across the room to watch satellite TV. The dining table has drop sides so it can accommodate four and then fold out of the walkway.

Pass on through the kitchen, past the bathroom on your right (with a clever pocket door so no one gets beaned in the hallway), a back door and closet on your left, then past the loft staircase to the right again, and you get to:

What you’re looking at is the mirrored wall of closets in the bedroom. Note the drawers all along the bottom. It reflects the queen bed and one of the two bedside tables, along with yet another wall of cabinets, this time at ceiling level. Oh yeah – there’s a dresser inside that closet as well. Could they have made better use of the space? I don’t see how.

Come back out the front door, and this is your front yard. A little ways down that hill is the river, which you can follow on a beautiful walking path, watching the water birds and the jumping fish. Try your hand at hooking one of those fish, or up the hill, swim in the pool that is one of the first in the southwest. You can also head into Glen Rose to see the historic sites or check out the dinosaur footprints at Fossil Rim.. However you choose to spend the day, imagine ending it like this:

If there’s anything better than listening to crickets and night birds from your own porch, it’s doing so in an Adirondack chair. What is it about an Adirondack chair that is so amazingly comfortable? Look up ‘ergonomic’ in the dictionary, this chair should be there. Cheaper than a chiropractor and maybe better looking.

If you’re in the market for a relaxing stay in a cabin, check out these beauties at Tres Rios in Glen Rose, Texas. We’ll leave the light on for you.
