‘Eco-friendly’ living is a hot topic these days, whether you live in a home or an RV. Here are a few quick tips on how you can make your style of living eco-friendlier while RV camping.
Reuse to infinity
One of the first things you can do is ditch the disposable items in your rig. Begin using cloth items when possible, such as napkins and shopping bags; use glass or washable items instead of Styrofoam for dinnerware; and use reusable storage units instead of saran wrap covered items when storing leftover food. This will cut back on your garbage, and also on slowly degrading waste items.
Compost vs Garbage
Composting items that you would normally turn into garbage helps you save room while RV camping. Leftover food, especially vegetables and meat, are easiest to use. Also, check with the resort to see if there are areas where there is gardening on site. Compost will help. One of our parks, Abita Springs, even has a worm farm!
Environmental-friendly cleaners
Sanitizing and cleaning the RV tanks has always been an issue. Many cleaning odors and additives are harmful to your health. Try using natural cleaners found in RV stores or use the same cleaners you have in your RV. When you have emptied the tank, simple items such as baking soda, vinegar, and a bag of ice put into the tank will help absorb and eliminate odor when travelling. Rice also acts as a scrubber while and helps scrape the tank while the RV is in motion. Rinse it out when you arrive to the new site and fill again with clean water.
Going solar
Check the size of your RV inverter and look for solar panels. RVs use a lot less energy in general so adding solar power to RV shouldn’t break the bank. The amount of panels varies with how much energy you tend to use in your RV, so plan your purchase to match your overall power needs.
