America’s Scenic Byways near Ocean Canyon Resorts

 

The United States is a huge, beautiful country. There is a good reason why RVing is such a popular pastime and hobby for people here! As you travel around the country, you can stick to highways that will get you to where you want to go quickly, or you could choose to go off the beaten path and check out some of our country’s Scenic Byways, specifically chosen and funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation for being exceptional. According to their official website, their definition of “scenic” is not limited to breathtaking vistas. America’s Byways represent the different depths of scenery in America. This includes “both natural and man-made panoramas; electrifying neon landscapes; ancient and modern history coming alive; native arts and culture; and scenes of friends, families, and strangers sharing their stories.”

Here are just a few of the scenic byways that are close to Ocean Canyon’s different resorts. Why don’t you check them out on your way to camping with us?

Talladega Scenic Drive

On U.S. Route 281 in the Talladega State Forest in Alabama is the 26.4 mile Talladega Scenic Drive. The road takes you over Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in Alabama. The road winds through the Appalachian Mountains, with beautiful rural scenes you will be sure to enjoy. Since you are going through the Talladega National Forest, there are many recreational opportunities for you to enjoy. There are many places where you can hike, picnic, and fish. Also make sure to check out Cheaha State Park, which features restaurants and shops. Keep your eyes peeled for Bald Eagle sightings!

Talimena Scenic Drive

Stretching 54 miles in the Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas and Oklahoma and coasting through the highest points between the Appalachians and the Rockies, the Talimena Scenic Drive is a beautiful and peaceful drive you can enjoy with your family. The drive goes through State Route 1 in Oklahoma and State Route 88 in Oklahoma. The drive includes passing over the Winding Stair and Rich Mountains. There is a lot of wildlife in the area, so you could get lucky and spot a black bear or even a road runner! There are many spots along the route to get out and enjoy the panoramas. Make sure to check out Queen Wilhelmina State Park in Arkansas and the Talimena State Park in Oklahoma.

Alabama’s Coastal Connection

Chock full of historic and natural gems, the 130 mile Coastal Connection Byway is beautiful and winds along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Along the route you are able to find the National Historic Landmaks of Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines, the Dauphin Island Audubon Sanctuary, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and Gulf State Park. There are also plenty of beaches and waterfronts for you to check out! Alabama’s coast is absolutely beautiful, and you can experience it all with your RV! Make sure to grab some seafood while you are in the area.
