No one know who built it but we know they used wooden pegs in the corners, southern techniques, and they added on a room about twenty years later when pine was plentiful in the area. Whoever built this cabin knew what they were doing and did it well, because 150 years later it still stands in a little park in Glen Rose, Texas:

Flashback 120 years ago: This beautiful courthouse was built in Glen Rose, Texas, to replace the one destroyed by fire a year earlier. It was built in the Romanesque Revival style from locally quarried limestone:

At age 21, Charles Barnard came from Connecticut to work with his brother at a trading post in Texas. At the age of 23, he bought the freedom of a young captive of the Comanche Indians, and two years later, she consented to be his wife. Theirs is a fascinating story that you can learn more about if you tour the Barnard Mill and art gallery. Here’s a statue of Charles and Juana Barnard, the patriarchs and first family of Glen Rose:

Flashback 100 years ago: Kids didn’t go to school in giant brick and concrete structures; they were taught in one room schoolhouses like this one:

This schoolhouse was built by the residents of Lanham Mill, a little town five miles outside Glen Rose, Texas. It sat high up on the bank of the Paluxy River overlooking a swimming hole in what is now Dinosaur Valley State Park. Kids of all ages were taught together in one room. Typical of the time, the building also served as church and community meeting hall. Did you or your parents go to school in a building like this? You can see this excellent example of a bygone era in the town of Glen Rose, Texas, where it was moved for preservation.
